a sort of backhanded compliment

"The words just come to you, don't they."

I never thought that sentence could be said in an insulting way.

The fact that the other person in the room got berated for his lack of writing skills just makes it all the worse.

the problem with hate crimes

The murder yesterday of a security guard at a museum is a hate crime, because of the topic of the museum. I suspect the deceased, being just a normal run-of-the-mill American, thought more on his way to work every morning about how grateful he was to have a job, than about how awesome it was to work at a place with a particular theme.

The murderer hated a group of people so much that murder made sense...and we don't even know if the guy he killed actually belonged to that group. The assailant was a known white supremacist with a history of jail time, apparently thought this was the best way to convince everyone else he was right. That's what you call an extremist - someone so enmeshed in their beliefs that they lose touch with reality.

Jane Austen & Zombies

I am odd -I was never a fan of Jane Austin.

But add in zombies, and some of her work might be entertaining:

facebook

The interesting thing about facebook is finding out that some people turn out as adults to be nothing like you thought they would, and others turn out to still be *exactly* the way you remember them.

I'm not sure that this is good or bad...just interesting to see that there were friends of mine in HS who turned out to be a hell of a lot more like me than any of us really thought we would.

The friend we all thought would be an actress (because she was fabulously beautiful, yet down to earth) is a stay at home mom who works renfest and is a burlesque dancer....and is Pagan, and loves the kushiel books.

The friend we thought would be a stick-in-the mud engineering type is....he drinks wine, designs airplanes, reads German memoirs for fun, and has dogs instead of kids.

the update of the week

I dislike driving near people who can't drive in the snow.

I received my royalty payment yesterday for my essay in Manifesting Prosperity. Yay me, I am now officially a paid writer.

Lots of thinking going on as I get through the work of figuring out what I know and what I don't know, spiritually and religiously speaking. It's odd, but good.

In other thinking news, I'm contemplating this concept of pride. I get nervous when people say they're proud of me, and I assume they are not sincere, and that it's just a ploy to make me see things their way.

A big part of this is that no one ever said they were proud of me as a kid.

yay bread!

Yay for a bread machine.

Now if only I'd read far enough to realize that this loaf won't be done baking until sometime after 1 am... I suppose the first loaf (cinnamon raisin bread) may be a good time to try out the cool down cycle, since we'll be up and about a few hours after it shuts off.

Wednesday night's project: whole wheat bread, because it means not having to buy bread anymore if I make it work.

reading and studying and stuff

Work has gotten wierd. My boss's boss got laid off, and he was one of my favorites.

I'm reading up on Buddhism. "Buddhism Plain & Simple" and "The Idiots Guide to Zen Living" are in my reading rotation right now. Very interesting, and rather oddly in line with places my brain has already gone.

I also was accepted into the FWTI clergy training program. Family Wiccan Tradition espouses the idea that your family should be your spiritual home, which also resonates strongly with me these days. And they're one of the most sane, down-to-earth groups of Pagans I've ran into recently.

sigh

my boss is on the phone with the help desk because he got a spam bounce message...because he's worried about telling everyone that he didn't actually send the spam, and thinks that someone must have broken into his email.

doh!
